BIDDEFORD, Maine – The Norwich University women's rugby team picked up a dominant 52-5 victory over the Univ. of New England on Saturday afternoon in National Intercollegiate Rugby Association (NIRA) action.
Senior center Sheila Decker (Saranac Lake, N.Y.) scored four tries and went 6-for-8 on conversions to account for 32 points to lead the Cadets' offense in a rout of the Nor'Easters.
Brooke Stafford (Glassboro, N.J.) scored a try, while Kennedy Mack (Staten Island, N.Y.), Liz Gregory (Monument, Colo.) and Molly Higgins (Thetford Center, Vt.) each scored their first collegiate tries as well to round out the Cadets' try scorers on the day.
The Cadets took 28-0 lead by the 28:37 mark of the first half with Decker scoring three of her tries in the process. She put Norwich on top for good at the 3:19 mark and then converted her own try to make it 7-0 Cadets.
Stafford touched down at the 12:26 mark to make it 14-0 Norwich after a Decker conversion. Decker made it 21-0 just 3:33 later with her second try of the day and another successful conversion.
Decker converted her own try again at the 28:37 mark to push the lead to 28-0 heading into the halftime break.
UNE struck first in the second half with Melissa Smith scoring a try at the 44:17 mark.
Norwich rattled off 24 more points with Decker scoring at the 50:44 mark, Higgins at the 56:19 mark, Gregory at the 61:16 mark and then Mack closing it out at the 68:07 mark.
Norwich improved to 2-1 with the win and is still 1-1 in NIRA Tier 1 action. The Cadets will travel to West Chester next Saturday to take on the Rams.
