NORTHFIELD, Vt. – The Norwich University women's rugby team hosted Colby-Sawyer College on Senior Day on Saturday afternoon at the Dog River Rugby Pitch.
The Cadets used a balanced scoring attack and strong second-half defense to roll to a 59-15 over the Chargers on a windy, but sunny day.
Senior Sheila Decker (Saranac Lake, N.Y.) got the scoring started with her first of four tries on the match with a score on a breakaway eight minutes into the contest. She sent the conversion through the uprights as well for a 7-0 NU lead.
The Chargers struck back at the 14 minute mark with a try by freshman Bailey Burt (South Burlington, Vt.) to cut the lead to 7-5 before Norwich junior Caitlin Heale (Christchurch, New Zealand) touched down off a pass from Decker seven minutes later. Decker converted once again for the 14-5 lead.
Junior Jordyn Enos (Salinas, Calif.) scored the final try of the half for CSC at the 28 minute mark while Norwich was playing with only 14 players due to injury for to make it 14-10. Decker added her second try four minutes later (converted) to give the Cadets the 21-10 lead at the half.
In the second half Norwich got tries from junior Angelica Greene (Pompano Beach, Fla.) senior Liz Gregory (Monument, Colo.), one more from Decker and Heale each and a final try by junior Ashley Nau (Sunrise, Fla.) while allowing just one Colby-Sawyer try (Burt) for the 59-15 final.
The Cadets improve to 4-2 overall on the season while the Chargers fall to 4-3. Norwich is next in action on Saturday, October 20th for a road contest at Brown University at 11:00 a.m.
