Women's Rugby: Norwich powers past UNE, 35-15

NORTHFIELD, Vt. - The Norwich University women's rugby team downed the Univ. of New England 35-15 in its 2019 home opener on Saturday afternoon at the NU Dog River Rugby Pitch as part of Norwich's Bicentennial and Homecoming Weekend. 

Emma Parizo (Grand Isle, Vt.) scored three tries, while Kennedy Mack (Staten Island, N.Y.) added two more tries to lead the Cadets' offense on the day. Angelica Greene (Pompano Beach, Fla.) and AnnaLeigh Runion (Greenville, S.C.) each touched down for one try as well on the day. 

Norwich (2-1, 2-1 NIRA D3) scored the first three tries of the game and took a 20-5 lead by halftime. Mack scored the first try in the sixth minute and then scored again on the final play of the first half to account for half of NU's offense in the opening 40 minutes.

Runion increased the Cadets' lead to 10-0 in the 18th minute and then Parizo stretched the lead to 15-0 with her first try of the day in the 24th minute.

UNE (1-1-1, 1-1 NIRA D3) got on the board in the 32nd minute with Fiona Thomas scoring to cut the deficit to 15-5 before Mack ended the first half scoring.

Norwich needed just 45 seconds to increase the lead to 25-5 to start the second half with Greene scoring her first try of the day. Parizo touched down for her second try of the day in the 55th minute to push the lead to 30-5. 

UNE scored back-to-back tries in the 55th and 64th minute with Mariah Chase and Mariah Aubin scoring for the Nor'Easters.

Parizo capped the scoring and completed her try hat trick on the final play of the second half.

Norwich travels to Castleton next Sunday for a 1 p.m. kickoff with the Spartans.
