BIDDEFORD, Maine - The Norwich University women's rugby team picked up a 24-10 victory over the Univ. of New England on Sunday afternoon in non-conference action.
Norwich (5-2, 3-2 NIRA D3) won its second straight match with the victory. Sophomore Kennedy Mack (Staten Island, N.Y.) led the Cadets' offense with a pair of tries, while senior captain AnnaLeigh Runion (Greenville, S.C.) and junior Shweta Mane (Delmar, N.Y.) each added a try as well.
UNE (1-4-1, 1-3 NIRA D3) opened the scoring in the 13th minute with Alyssa Ehrenfried scoring a try.
Mack scored her first try of the day in the 19th minute to knot the score back up at 5-5. The Cadets took their first lead of the game in the 24th minute with Mane touching down to give NU a 10-5 lead heading into halftime.
UNE scored first again to open the second half with Brooke Sorbello notching the try to tie the game back up at 10-10 in the 44th minute.
Norwich took the lead for good though with Runion scoring a converted try with Emma Parizo adding the successful kick to make it 17-10 Norwich in the 58th minute.
Mack capped the scoring in the 70th minute with her second try of the day and following a successful Parizo kick, Norwich stretched the lead to 24-10.
Norwich will return home to the NU Dog River Rugby Pitch for its final regular season home game on Saturday, Oct. 26th when it hosts NIRA Division III leader Colby-Sawyer at 11 a.m.
The Cadets are currently tied with Bowdoin for second place in the NIRA D-III standings, but the Polar Bears have a game in hand and a head-to-head victory over Norwich.
The top four teams qualify for the NIRA Division III playoffs with the top two seeds hosting.
