NORTHFIELD, Vt. – The Norwich University women's soccer team dropped a 2-1 heartbreaker in overtime to Mount Ida on Wednesday night at Sabine Field at Haynes Family Stadium in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) action.
Junior midfielder Sierra Legge scored 8:15 into the first overtime on a penalty kick to lift Mount Ida (3-12-0, 2-8-0 GNAC) to a 2-1 victory over Norwich.
Legge buried the penalty kick attempt into the bottom right corner of the net after Briana Tomaselli drew the PK attempt after contact with Norwich freshman goalkeeper Holly Lutz (Hamburg, N.J.) at the top of the penalty box.
After battling for 83 scoreless minutes, both teams scored goals in the 84th minute, just 50 seconds apart. Mount Ida took a 1-0 lead when Tomaselli scored her 10th goal of the season off an assist from Rachael Reese.
Norwich answered right back on a corner kick when senior defender Liz Chapdelaine served the ball in from the right and junior midfielder Alex Frank (Medford, N.J.) one-time side volleyed the ball into the net and past Mount Ida goalkeeper Rebecca Beaulieu to knot the match up at one.
Frank became the first NU player other than Baylie Lamarre (Tyngsboro, Mass.) to score a goal this season.
Mount Ida outshot Norwich 25-2. Lutz made 11 saves in her first collegiate start in goal. Beaulieu picked up the victory without recording a save.
Norwich wraps up the GNAC regular season on the road on Saturday at the Univ. of St, Joseph (Conn.) at 1 p.m. The Cadets close out the 2013 season at home, next Tuesday, Oct. 29 at 3 p.m. against Plattsburgh State.
