CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - The Norwich University women's soccer team opened the Heather Faasse era in impressive fashion with a 4-0 victory over Newbury College on Friday afternoon in non-conference action.
Four different players scored their first collegiate goals to lead the Cadets (1-0-0, 0-0-0 GNAC) to their second victory in as many years over Newbury College. NU topped the Nighthawks 8-0 last year on Sabine Field.
Junior Morgan Smith (Northfield, Vt.) opened the scoring in the eighth minute to take a 1-0 lead. An initial NU shot was saved by Newbury goalkeeper Noelle Sass on a dive to her left, but the rebound found the feet of Morgan Smith, who buried it in the open side for the opening score of the game and her first collegiate goal.
Junior transfer Kaila Lemmer (Barnard, Vt.) doubled the lead in the 18th minute, scoring on a cross from the left side, which she struck home from just outside 10 yards, giving the Cadets a 2-0 lead.
Freshman Julia Koron (Pittsford, N.Y.) struck just before halftime in the 42nd minute to give Norwich a 3-0 lead. Fellow freshman Karyssa Lachance (Gorham, N.H.) added one more second half tally for the Cadets in the 81st minute on their way to securing the 4-0 win.
Norwich sophomore goalkeeper Katie Bishop-Manning (New York, N.Y.) got the nod in net for Norwich. Bishop-Manning made a pair of saves on the afternoon, moving to 1-0 this season. Freshman Lindsey Gordon (Wiscasset, Maine) made her first collegiate appearance, going untested in nearly 40 minutes of action in the second half. Sass fell to 0-1 despite an 18-save performance for the Nighthawks.
The Cadets are back in action tomorrow afternoon for their home opener, a 4:00 p.m. non-conference game against Pine Manor.
