HARTFORD, Conn. – Senior midfielder Madison Oelker (West Liberty, Ohio) scored on a penalty kick in the 49th minute to lift the Norwich University women's soccer team to its first victory of the 2019 season with a 1-0 win over the Univ. of St. Joseph (Conn.) on Saturday afternoon.
Oelker beat USJ goalkeeper Lindsey Montminy to the top right corner of the net for her first goal of the season to give the Cadets a lead that they would never relinquish.
Sophomore goalkeeper Kim Watt (Lindenhurst, N.Y.) made the lead stand up from there, stopping all seven shots on goal that she faced to pick up her first career shutout.
Norwich (1-4, 1-0 GNAC) not only picked up its first win of the season, the Cadets also handed USJ its first loss of the season after the Blue Jays had rattled off four straight wins coming into Saturday's conference opener for both teams.
USJ outshot Norwich by a slim 16-14 margin, but had a 9-2 advantage in corner kicks.
After playing five straight games on the road to start the season, Norwich will finally make its home debut on Wednesday, Sept. 18 when the Cadets host NVU-Johnson at 7 p.m. on Sabine Field at Haynes Family Stadium.
