NORTHFIELD, Vt. – Junior Sydney Rocheville (Salem, Mass.) notched four assists, while sophomore Karyssa Lachance (Gorham, N.H.) scored a hat trick to lead the Norwich University women's soccer team to a crucial 4-2 victory over Simmons University on Friday night.
Rocheville tied the program record for assists in a single game with her four helpers on each Norwich goal to help lead the Cadets' offense and pick up three huge points in the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) standings. The win snapped a seven-game losing streak vs. Simmons and was Norwich's first victory over the Sharks since 2010.
Rocheville tied Megan Curran '97, who had four assists vs. Thomas on Oct. 10, 1996, which had previously stood as the lone occurrence in program history.
Lachance also netted her first collegiate hat trick and brought her team-leading total to 10 goals on the season to tie her total from last season and give her 20 goals in her Maroon & Gold career.
Senior Kaila Lemmer (Barnard, Vt.) opened the scoring in the seventh minute as she was left unmarked by the Simmons' defense on a free-kick service from Rocheville. The ball took a bounce inside the 18 and then Lemmer headed the ball past Simmons' goalkeeper Melanie Colman and give the Cadets a 1-0 lead.
Lachance scored exactly five minutes later with her first of the game and eighth of the season off another assist from Rocheville. Rocheville played a through ball and then Lachance sped past the Simmons defense and was first to the ball, she got a touch on it and then ball deflected off Colman but bounced right back of the body of Lachance and into the open net.
Rocheville played another perfect through ball in the 20th minute with Lachance chasing it down and fending off a Simmons defender before slipping the ball into the bottom corner of the net off a left-footed shot with Colman coming off her line to challenge.
Lachance capped the Norwich scoring in the 54th minute to complete her hat trick and increased the lead to 4-0 after Rocheville played a through ball between a pair of Simmons defenders and then Lachance ran down on it and blistered the ball into the bottom right corner of the net.
Simmons (1-10-1, 1-7-0 GNAC) scored twice in the second half to cut into the Norwich lead with two goals from Izabella Warren, but it was too little too late as the Cadets' four-goal cushion proved to be insurmountable.
Warren scored her fourth goal of the season with a shot into the left corner of the net after the ball pin-balled in the box and she was able to tuck it into the corner of the net through a screen that NU sophomore goalkeeper Lindsey Gordon (Wiscasset, Maine) was screen on.
Warren scored again in the 88th minute with another unassisted tally with a right-footed strike into the left side of the net.
Norwich (4-8-1, 3-4-1 GNAC) was outshot 17-15 by Simmons, including an 11-8 margin in the second half that was largely dominated by the Sharks. Gordon came on to make seven saves for the Cadets in the second half after Kim Watt (Lindenhurst, N.Y.) made five in the first half. Watt picked up the win to improve to 4-7-1 on the season.
Norwich will have another important league contest on Wednesday, Oct. 16 as the Cadets host Rivier at 4 p.m.
