Volleyball: Cadets drop one to Southern Vermont, 3-1

BENNINGTON, Vt. - The second day of the 2018 Vermont Volleyball Classic started at noon on Monday for the Cadets, as they were defeated by the hosting Southern Vermont Mountaineers in game one before the Championship Game was suspended later in the afternoon due to unsafe playing conditions.

Coming off a 2-0 day one with victories over NVU-Lyndon and NVU-Johnson, the Cadets had already locked up a spot in the championship with Southern Vermont.

The Mountaineers came out swinging, taking the first set by a 25-21 score. Norwich answered back with a 25-23 victory in set two, but SVC fired back with 25-20 and 25-22 victories to take the first match of the day.

Kathryn Farnum (North Andover, Mass.) and Michele Zummo (Highland Mills, N.Y) led the way for Norwich with eight kills and eight digs apiece. Senior Emily Oliver (Sagamore Hills, Ohio) collected 27 assists, ten digs, and six kills, and freshman libero Olivia Brown (Rye, N.H.) led the team with 24 digs.

Game two was suspended in the middle of the second set, as the stifling Labor Day heat and humidity caused the playing conditions in the Mountaineer Athletic Center to become too dangerous and slippery to continue. The two schools have yet to decide when, and if, they'll resume play.

For now, the Cadets are set to open up conference play next at Albertus Magnus. They'll take on the Falcons and the Saints of Emmanuel College in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference showdown set to start on Saturday at 1:00 PM.
