NEW HAVEN, Ct. - The Norwich University volleyball team dropped a pair of matches on the road on Saturday afternoon, falling to the Emmanuel Saints and Albertus Magnus Falcons in tri-match action in Connecticut.
The Cadets never led during their first match of the day against Emmanuel, losing 3-0 on sets of 25-18, 25-22, and 25-16. Norwich did themselves no favors, committing 21 attack errors and eight service errors. Michele Zummo (Highland Mills, N.Y.) led Norwich with 10 kills while Emily Oliver (Sagamore Hills, Ohio) tallied 19 assists. Brianna Dawson (Katonah, N.Y.) made her return to the starting lineup and racked up 20 digs and a pair of service aces. As a team, Norwich shot a .027 attacking percentage and fell victim to 13 Emmanuel service aces.
Game two was much more competitive but much more heartbreaking for the Cadets. Norwich battled the hosting Falcons of Albertus Magnus to a 3-2 loss, with set scores of 22-25, 24-26, 27-25, 25-23, and 7-15. The Cadets rallied from a 2-0 disadvantage to win back-to-back sets to force a decisive fifth set, but couldn't best the Falcons in the end. Kathryn Farnum (North Andover, Mass.) led the Cadets with 13 kills on a solid .282 percentage, three service aces, and 16 digs. Oliver tallied 31 assists and Rebecca Finley (Waynesville, Mo.) tallied seven blocks in the match.
Brianna Dawson recorded 35 digs in the second match of the day, a career-best for the junior libero and the most in a single game in Cadets' program history.
The pair of losses drops Norwich down to 2-3 on the young season. They'll come home on Wednesday, September 12th, for their next tilt and their 2018 season opener, where they'll take on the Keene State squad at 6:30 PM in Andrews Hall.
