Volleyball: Cadets impress in season opening sweep at Vermont Volleyball Classic

JOHNSONVILLE, Vt. - The Norwich University volleyball team had an impressive 2019 debut, sweeping Castleton and NVU-Johnson on Day 1 of the Vermont Volleyball Classic, hosted by NVU-Johnson at Carter Gymnasium. 

Norwich (2-0) swept Castleton by scores of 25-15, 25-11 and 25-9. The Cadets then topped NVU-Johnson in four sets by scores of 25-21, 25-19, 18-25 and 25-16 to complete sweep on the day.

Senior Michele Zummo (Highland Mills, N.Y.) totaled 18 kills and 22 digs on the day to lead Norwich. Freshman Maggie McNeil (Gilford, N.H.) had a strong debut, notching 13 kills, including a game-high eight in the Cadets' win over Castleton. She also led Norwich with a .467 hitting percentage in the season opener, while the Cadets were .348 as a team. 

Sophomore Addison Hall (Apple Valley, Calif.) had 11 kills, while Julia Schroeder (Victorville, Calif.) had 13 kills.

Senior Brianna Dawson (Katonah, N.Y.) led the defensive effort with 23 digs across the two matches. 

Freshman Sarah Farnum (North Andover, Mass.) also had an impressive debut as the Cadets' new setter, notching 43 assists, including 24 in the four-set win over NVU-Johnson.

Norwich will look to keep its momentum rolling into tomorrow's action when it takes on NVU-Lyndon at 9 a.m. in Carter Gymnasium. With a win, Norwich would clinch a spot in the Vermont Volleyball Classic championship match slated for later that afternoon.
