JOHNSONVILLE, Vt. - The Norwich University women's volleyball team split a pair of matches on the second day of the 2019 Vermont College Volleyball Classic on Saturday, hosted by NVU-Johnson at Carter Gym.
Junior Padayissa Fecu (Brockton, Mass.) led the Cadets to a 3-0 sweep of NVU-Lyndon with a team-high 11 service aces. Norwich dropped a five-set thriller to NVU-Johnson in the championship though to suffer its first loss of 2019.
Norwich dominated NVU-Lyndon from the opening service, beating the Hornets 25-3, 25-4 and 25-2. Norwich took the opening set vs. NVU-Johnson 25-17, but then lost 25-20 and 25-18, before rebounding to take the fourth set 25-15. However, NVU-Johnson rallied to take the fifth set 15-5 and claim the title.
Julia Schroeder (Victorville, Calif.) added 10 service aces in the Lyndon match, while sophomore Olivia Brown (Rye, N.H.) had seven aces. Michele Zummo (Highland Mills, N.Y.) had three kills as well for Norwich.
In the NVU-Johnson match, freshman Sarah Farnum (North Andover, Mass.) continued her strong rookie campaign start with 20 assists. Zummo had a team-leading six kills and 10 digs. Maggie McNeil (Gilford, N.H.) had four kills, while Schroeder had five. Marissa Perrotti (Moultonborough, N.H.) and Addison Hall (Apple Valley, Calif.) each had three kills as well to round out the leaders.
Norwich returns to action on Saturday, Sept. 7 when it hosts its first trimatch of the season against MCLA and Dean starting at 11 a.m. in Andrews Hall Gymnasium. All three matches will be videostreamed live on www.norwichathletics.com/livestream.
