NORTHFIELD, Vt. - The Norwich University women's volleyball team scored a decisive 3-0 win over visiting Castleton University in non-conference action on Wednesday evening in Andrews Hall Gymnasium.
Senior outside hitter Monika Schneider (Brookline, N.H.) celebrated her senior day with a small ceremony before the game. Norwich (10-7) then proceeded to extend its all-time winning streak to 20 matches over the Spartans with the win.
Senior outside hitter Michele Zummo (Highland, Mills, N.Y.) led the Cadets at the attack line with a season-tying 12 kills, while and Marissa Perrotti (Moutlonborough, N.H.) added six kills. Freshman setter Sarah Farnum (North Andover, Mass.) deftly steered the offense registering 29 assists. Senior Brianna Dawson (Katonah, N.Y.) and sophomore Olivia Brown (Rye, N.H.) led the team defensively with 12 digs, while Brown doubled as the star server tallying five service aces.
Castleton (7-10) was led offensively by Shannon Manchester, LIzzie Goodrich and Madison Hamelink who all recorded a trio of kills. Bre MacDuff notched 10 assists while engineering the Spartans' offense. Meghan Zawatsky was key defensively as she led the team with a game-high 16 digs.
Norwich never trailed in the match with the closest score coming in the opening set when Castleton battled back from an 11-6 deficit to tie the first set at 13-13 apiece. The Cadets used a 5-0 run immediately after to increase their lead to five once again and closed out the set with with a kill by junior outside hitter Kathryn Farnum (North Andover, Mass.).
Noriwch cruised to victory in both the second and third sets en route to the non-conference win.
Norwich will aim to build upon its current three-game winning streak this Saturday as it hosts a Great Northeast Athletic Conference tri-match against Simmons University and Albertus Magnus College.
