Volleyball: Historic Day Includes a 5-Set GNAC Victory over Regis

BOSTON, Mass. – Freshman setter Sarah Farnum (North Andover, Mass.) registered a career-best and all-time program high 53 assists in helping power the Norwich University women's volleyball team past Regis College, 3-2, in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) play on Saturday at Jean Yawkey Center.

Norwich 3 Regis 2 (25-23, 25-15, 23-25, 24-26, 15-9)

The Cadets collectively hit .223 as a team and were buoyed by their outside hitters as junior Kathryn Farnum (North Andover, Mass.) and senior Michele Zummo (Highland Mills, N.Y.) combined for 39 kills with 20 from K. Farnum and 19 from Zummo.

S. Farnum's 53 assists topped the previous standard of 52 by Katie Crane which came against Anna Maria on October 4, 2014. Senior defensive specialist Brianna Dawson (Katonah, N.Y.) led the team defensively with 30 digs.

In the opening set, Norwich twice rallied back from large deficits to tie the match at 23-23. After finding itself down 23-17, the team used an 8-0 run to run the table and take the first match 25-23. Four different hitters notched kills down the stretch to secure the first set victory.

The Cadets and Pride exchanged points through the midway point of the second set. With the Cadets trailing 11-10, the team grabbed a commanding 20-11 lead thanks to a 10-0 run which included a pair of kills from Zummo and two service aces from S. Farnum. After the teams traded rally points, Norwich grabbed a win in the second set following a kill by sophomore middle blocker Addison Hall (Apple Valley Calif.) and a Pride attack error.

Norwich looked poised to sweep Regis in the third set building an 18-10 lead through the midway point of the set. However, five errors by the Cadets helped spur the Pride to an 8-0 run to knot the score at 18-18. After back-and-forth rallies continued to keep the score even at 22-22, a pair of Pride kills helped clinch the win and shifted the momentum to Regis.

Aside from a brief early lead, the Cadets trailed Regis for much of the fourth set. A kill by Zummo combined with a pair of miscues by the Pride gave Norwich a 24-23 lead and the serve for match point. However, a clutch kill by Regis and two untimely errors by the Cadets sent the match to a deciding fifth set.

The finale had the teams all square at 4-4 in the early going. A pair of kills by K. Farnum along with one from Zummo and junior right side hitter Julia Schroeder (Victorville, Calif.) supplied the Cadets with a five-point cushion at 10-5. Two more kills from Zummo and the match point kill from senior middle blocker Marissa Perrotti (Moultonborough, N.H.) gave Norwich the 15-9 decision.
